Hearts open at Warm Hubs

Churches line up to provide a warm space for people who can’t afford heating.

Tuesday is a busy day for Loughborough’s warm spaces with several organisations, mainly churches offering somewhere for people to go who can’t afford to put on the heating.

Park Road in Shelthorpe has two venues open, the Sacred Heart church hall next to Tesco and the Beacon Centre further along.

On Thursday the Good Shepherd church, also on Park Road extends a welcome with support from Charnwood Borough Council with snacks and games on offer.

Students took advantage of the free power to charge up their laptops to study at the Beacon Centre, organised by Junction Church that meets at De Lisle College.

It’s also open on Fridays with volunteer support workers coming in to help struggling families and a youth warm hub for teenagers looking for somewhere to chill.

Amy Chandler coordinates the effort at the Beacon Centre to provide space where families and others can relieve the current pressure on their energy bills.

She said she can also put people in touch with other agencies for more help such as the Bridge East Midlands for people vulnerably housed or homeless.

“We have warm packs including blankets for anyone who needs them,” said Amy.
