Public put down stones to ordinary people

People queued to lay a pebble on a commemoration stone at Queen’s Park bandstand in remembrance of the Holocaust.

The annual event held on the day of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, January 27, was themed this year as ‘ordinary people’.

It highlights the role played by everyday people in the holocaust as victims as well as perpetrators, bystanders, witnesses and as resistance.

Mayor of Charnwood Cllr Jennifer Tillotson read a statement of commitment.

“Now as ever we must stand up against hatred and prejudice of any sort and remember how ordinary people contribute,” said Cllr Tillotson.

Anthony Gimpel, formerly of Charnwood Borough Council closed the ceremony emphasising the necessity of: “Lest we forget”.
