YOUNG people can get involved with their community to better themselves after an allocation of a lump sum from government.
Known as levelling – up money Government Department for Levelling – Up, Housing and Communities’ (DLUHC)U.K. shared prosperity fund is to make £4Million pounds available to projects in Charnwood over the next three years.
The future investment was announced at the first full council meeting of the year last Monday 23 January by Council Leader Cllr Jonathan Morgan who outlined recipient projects involving young people.
He said he was particularly pleased the fund would back Generation Charnwood supported by the Sports’ Trust.
“Generation Charnwood in partnership with the Youth Sports’ Trust is a project I’ve been very keen on for some time,”” said Cllr Morgan.
It aims to improve the wellbeing, life chances and employability skills of young people in the borough through sport. The project will work with schools, employers and partners to support them to use sport to help improve young people’s skills. It will also offer training to help young people develop leadership skills, support after school activities and help young people connect with potential employers.
He went on to outline other youth organisations and groups in Loughborough set to receive a share of the pot including Gorse Covert Youth Project and Nanpantan Scout Hut.

A youth wing could be set up at Gorse Covert Community Centre to operate drop-in sessions, workshops and a safe space for young people. The project would also create a Youth Council to help give young people a voice. As well as discussions, it would also help young people give their views on local and national issues.

Cllr Morgan said at the meeting last Monday the funding had only just been announced and he’s very pleased.
Charnwood Borough Council Lead for Communities Leigh Harper – Davies said anything to help young people develop through sport and activity is good.
“It’s good for their physical and mental health,” said Cllr Harper – Davies.
