It’s Good to Grow

SHARING fresh food and plants over a cup of tea at an open day on a community allotment is to be part of a nationwide event.

Good To Grow organised by Sustain, an alliance for better food and farming, is a day of edible action on Saturday 22 April between 3 – 5pm at the Transition community allotment on King George Road Loughborough.

Transition Loughborough runs the allotment in its quest for a lower carbon community with reduced dependence on fossil fuels to fight the environmental crisis and grow climate – resilient crops.

Martha Worsching of Transition said the event celebrates growing food together and as this year coincides with Eid, alongside Sustain’s aim of building cultural capital, a special invite is extended to the town’s Muslim community.

“It would also be good to have some more residents around the Corner Garden on Cambridge Street to help look after crops planted there by affiliate group Incredible Edible,” said Martha

Transition’s community allotment cultivates solution – focused approaches to growing food in response to the energy crisis and climate change. It’s currently implementing a manual water pump to take water to the land from a nearby stream.

“On Good to Grow day we’ll discuss how more food can be grown and harvested locally, and we’ll have a space for people to swap seeds, plants and produce. Anyone interested in getting more local food produced in the town or has a glut of tomato seedlings & homemade jam you’d like to share with others, please pop along,” said a spokesperson for Transition.

“Good to Grow day celebrates spring, opens doors to the community and encourages people to volunteer in community spaces,” said Sustain.
