Make Do and Mend Again

Missing a button on your favourite shirt or just needing an extra inch on the waistband to fit into last summer’s best trousers?
Transition Loughborough is holding another of its popular repair cafes; this time offering a chance to give a second – innings to items of clothing and textiles that would otherwise be binned.
On Saturday May 20 9.30 am – 12pm at Fearon Hall it will be possible to extend the life of clothing and textiles with a stitch here or a darn there by a team of expert volunteers on hand to show you how to do a cost-effective fix.
Janet Smith of Transition Loughborough said if you have clothes that need a bit of attention bring them along to the Repair Café.
“Maybe you’ve got a rip on a sleeve or a threadbare patch on a favourite jumper? Don’t throw them away, bring them to the Repair café at Fearon Hall,” said Janet.
Fast fashion – the constant provision of new styles at very low prices – has led to a big increase in the quantity of clothes produced and thrown away.
Clothes and household textiles are responsible for water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and landfill.
Repair Cafes support moves to a circular economy whereby most things are recycled and reused to reduce landfill.
On Saturday there will also be someone on hand who can sharpen things including scissors that are used for needlework, but also secateurs, loppers, shears, etc.!
