The university has been ranked number one in achieving one of the United Nations’ sustainable development goals of providing affordable and clean energy.
It scored highest in the Times Higher Educational Supplement (THES) impact ratings for this category, goal seven; measuring how much the universities are fulfilling the UN’s 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) adopted in 2015 to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure peace and prosperity by 2030.
It was also ranked joint 61st globally for SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth in the impact rankings, which includes 1,591 universities from 112 countries/regions.
Loughborough University’s Centre for Sustainable Energy, Transitions, Environment and Resilience (STEER) works across the globe to make pledge seven of providing affordable and clean energy a reality.
The National Facility for High Resolution Cathodoluminescence (CL) Analysis researching show solar cells and electronic devices work with natural light is also to open on campus, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
Work is also underway to develop a four wheeled electric vehicle for use in India to promote cleaner vehicle uptake, improve air quality and get closer to meeting CO2 emissions.
