LIVING a more environmentally – conscious life as temperatures break records is to be at the heart of a new fair.
With June the hottest documented the Sustainability Fair is being organised by Charnwood Eco Hub, a community interest company founded by friends Emma Ward and Councillor for Southfields ward Sarah Goode, who have both been involved in environmental projects for some time. Cllr Sarah Goode
The event is to be held at Queen’s Park in Loughborough on 17 September between 10 am –3 pm.
Emma and Sarah said they have identified a need to bring together local environmental organisations and initiatives to raise awareness of them amongst local residents to help them reduce their own carbon footprint and live more sustainably.
“We are both passionate about the planet and involved in environmental projects locally for some time,” said Emma Ward.
Businesses and groups within the aims of the Sustainability Fair – local, vegetarian or vegan, organic, recycled, upcycled and promoting sustainability – will hold workshops and display their work alongside local craftspeople and food and drink stalls.
June this year was the hottest on record eclipsing the last temperature record by nearly a full degree recording an average mean temperature of 15. 8 degrees, 2.5C above the usual June average and beating the record of 14.9C reached in 1940 and 1976.
The Met Office said the record-breaking hot spell bore the “fingerprint of climate change”. The forecaster said the likelihood of record-breaking heat had at least doubled since the period around 1940.
Paul Davies, its chief meteorologist, said: “Alongside natural variability, the background warming of the Earth’s atmosphere due to human-induced climate change has driven up the possibility of reaching record high temperatures.”
