Council Comments On Flags

Charnwood Borough Council’s post

At Charnwood Borough Council, we take pride in celebrating our national identity in a way that is both respectful and inclusive.

As part of our established flag flying programme, we regularly fly the St George’s Flag and the Union Flag at our Council offices and Loughborough Town Hall.

These flags are symbols of unity — they should bring people together, not drive us apart.

We’ve recently seen an increase in flags being flown on lampposts across the borough and received comments and feedback from our communities.

Some residents support this informal display of national pride, while others have expressed concerns about the intentions behind some of the flags and the discomfort they feel as a result.

For clarity, we do not manage lampposts, that is Leicestershire County Council, and it has publicly stated its approach to the situation, saying it will only remove flags if they are a serious safety risk.

On a broader note, as community leaders, we urge all residents and organisations to approach these matters with tolerance and mutual respect.

Differences of opinion are natural and healthy in any vibrant community, but they must be expressed in ways that do not cause distress or division.

Earlier this year, we worked with our communities to develop a narrative that best reflects and describes Charnwood. The response was overwhelmingly positive. One of the strongest messages we heard was the pride residents feel in our borough — especially in its diverse, warm, and welcoming people.

Today is a moment to reaffirm those sentiments. Let’s continue working together to build stronger, more cohesive communities. Debate, challenge, and scrutiny are part of that journey — but there is no place for actions or words that cause hurt or anger.

Let’s move forward with kindness, understanding, and a shared commitment to continue making Charnwood a place where everyone feels they belong.
