ONE member of Parliament has said its time for St George cross and union flags lining the streets to be taken down.
MP for Loughborough Dr Jeevun Sandher put out a video on social media calling for the national symbols he claims he loves to be removed from lampposts.
Dr Sandher said he is going to ask Leicestershire County Council, controlled by Reform to take the flags down as it has already said they are illegal.
“Flags fly from almost every single lamppost, getting a bit tatty, the cable ties are coming loose, they could blow off in the wind,” said Dr Sandher.
“They’re beginning to make people feel uneasy,” he said.
Previously he discussed how he loves the flags, that they represent our nations and how his wife wore the flag almost every day on her uniform during her time in the British army.
But he said following messages and emails in his inbox it’s time for them to taken down.
“I’ll take people at their word. People who say this is about national pride,” he said
“I’m proud of my country too, and I’m proud of our flag. But I do understand why others feel that it’s about excluding people. Why others feel that it’s about saying who belongs here and who doesn’t. We’re one British people and should be standing together underneath our flag, not some of us looking up with unease,” added Dr Sandher.
But one resident who grew up on Shelthorpe said he thinks it’s nice to see the symbols flying.
“I like seeing them fly, they’re part of our British identity we’ve been losing over the last few years,” he said.
And leader of Charnwood Borough Council Cllr Jewel Miah suffered a social media ‘pile on’ when he posted the flags were making his community uncomfortable.
Misinterpreting his use of the word community to mean the borough as a whole when he was speaking on behalf of the Muslim population, of which he is one, he was bombarded with angry and hostile posts challenging who he was representing and his interpretation of the values behind flag flying
