Make Do & Mend

Broken items ‘fit for the tip’ can be brought back to life and given a second innings at an event to fix goods that might otherwise be thrown away.

Woodhouse Eaves Repair Café is to hold its latest session at King George’s Hall in the village on Saturday 18 February between 9.30 – 12. 30. Items for repair can be taken up until 11.45am.

A repair café is an opportunity for people to come together to share knowledge and expertise on how to mend stuff, bringing along things that no longer work to be upcycled on the understanding they would otherwise be thrown away.

Any small household electronic (low voltage) items such as kettles, toasters, vacuum cleaners can be given years more usage if a fix is deemed possible. Repairers have the right to refuse a repair.

Other categories include clothes; darning, patching, replacing small zips, wiping mobile phones, a watch and jewellery clinic, small tool sharpening and bike repairs and maintenance. Hand – stitched Mors bags made from old pieces of fabric will also be in use.

This Repair Café also intends to work with Leicestershire community police to provide DNA bike tagging, crime prevention advice, bike passports and anti – peel – proof Selecta DNA stickers.

Woodhouse Eaves is an accredited plastic – free community receiving the status from Surfers Against Sewage in 2021.

WHE Plastic free said: “It would be extremely difficult to live a plastic – free life but there are many things we can do to reduce our use especially of single – use plastic”.

Please note: Loughborough University is planning to hold a Repair Café on campus and is looking for any volunteers?
